about

This album is a selection of works that were created by combining generative techniques with other compositional forms. By allowing a degree of “defined randomness” into the creative process, whether from algorithms or extended loops, Alan discovered musical relationships and directions that he may not otherwise have considered, enabling him to explore new avenues of creativity.

These compositions are, therefore, snapshots of a potentially endless process, moments that resonated for Alan on a deeply personal creative level.

..there's always the sense that this suspended music could go anywhere which, even in the most comforting of pieces, creates a frisson of tension…the best approach is like mantra yoga: just focus on a single abstract thought and immerse yourself in the sound which exists of itself. That way you can experience the elegance of these atmospheres.
Graham Reid, Elsewhere, 3/12/21 www.elsewhere.co.nz/further/10139/alan-brown-murmur-rattle-seventh-house-music-bandcamp/

The layering and looping effects on Murmur are seamless, as themes shimmer and shift. And because the changes flow so naturally, you are always inside the music. Transmission becomes Murmur and so on throughout. And because of these beguiling and subtle shifts, you lose your awareness of time and become more aware of space… In effect, these are engagements, and each invites the listener to become a participant…This album provides respite and applies a balm. It is a call to pause and reflect. It slows our steps and guides us to our better selves, and out of that, refreshed, we are the better for it.
John Fenton, Jazz Local 32, 13/12/21 jazzlocal32.com/2021/12/13/seventh-house-music-exile-murmurs-review/

Murmur is not an album that grabs the listener by the ears, but rather one that quietly awaits the listener to approach. It is an album of sonic focus, of allusion, and of sonic suspension with tracks feeling like they could move in several different sonic directions, but it’s never the one that the listener expects. This realm of musical possibility creates an exquisite sense of tension and release…This is minimalist electronic music at its finest, and makes for an interesting new facet to Alan Brown’s already incredible career.
